How to Prevent Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a condition that affects your joints and develops over time as the cartilage that stops your bones from rubbing together wears away. When that happens, your knees, hips and other joints can become stiff and painful. Osteoarthritis doesn’t have a cure, although it can be managed with home care and orthopedic care. Control Your Weight

Staying within a healthy weight range is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of osteoarthritis. Being obese or overweight puts more strain on your body’s weight-bearing joints, including your hips and knees, which causes the cartilage in these joints to wear away. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise reduces this strain.

Stay Active

Exercising regularly keeps the muscles around your joints strong and flexible, which can help prevent osteoarthritis. Focus on exercises that won’t strain your joints, such as riding a bike, swimming or lifting weights. Make sure you talk to your doctor about safe exercises first if you’re already dealing with joint pain and stiffness.

Eat Healthy

Certain nutrients have been associated with a reduced risk of osteoarthritis, including:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids: These healthy fats, which are found in fish, walnuts, flaxseed and olives, help relieve joint inflammation.
  • Vitamin D: Exposure to sunlight causes your body to create this vitamin. You can also get it by eating salmon, eggs, milk and vitamin D-fortified cereal.
  • Vitamin C: You can get vitamin C from citrus fruits, broccoli, leafy greens, sweet potatoes and green peppers.

Prevent Injuries

Injuring one of your joints results in a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis in that same joint as you age. You can lower your risk of joint injuries by warming up and cooling down before exercising, wearing shoes with shock absorption, and running on softer surfaces.
